As I introduce my new obese clients to my fast weight loss methods based on eating real whole food, they panic. I was the same way. At 256 lbs, depressed to the point that I was worried for my safety I made an appointment with a naturopath. I told her my concerns for my health, my history of obesity and a lifetime of dieting. She wasn’t much help, but allowed me the blood tests to prove my thoughts on what was wrong with me. The following year after I had lost 136 pounds with a raw foods diet, I returned for my final blood work. It was then that she shared with me the note she made on our first visit: “Patient views food as poison.”

We both laughed at that, but it was not far from the truth. Not just for me, but as I have learned from helping so many other obese women it is a common theme among the obese. None of us feel that we can trust food because we cannot trust ourselves with it. It has been the cause of all our weight problems, not actual food, but our unhealthy relationship with it. For this reason we come to fear it.

One of the biggest concerns for the obese in our relationship with food is that we have no idea how to eat “normal.” We are great on diets, but outside that structure, all we seem to know is how to overeat. It is that overeating that makes us obese and ill, so in our minds even though we love food and go to it for comfort and joy we know that it is killing us.

When I ask my new obese clients how they would eat if they were a normal person they either tell me that normal people can eat anything they want, which of course we all know is not true, and then they shrug. They have no idea how to eat in moderation or even wat to eat. My program requires obese clients to start off with a diet of 1800 calories. Without fail, they each tell me that is way too many calories and that they will gain weight. It takes me the two weeks of discovery that I require to convince them otherwise.

The first week is always full of panic. Their menus are made up of foods and quantities they have picked up from dieting their whole lives. A lot of it is food they don’t care for and would never eat if they weren’t on a diet. When I tell them to eat more, to try something new they balk. “No, no, I will lose control. I can’t do it.” In truth, that is exactly what I want them to do. It is only after examining what puts them out of control, that I can help them bring things back to the middle and find a satisfying solution that will allow them to take responsibility for their daily food intake.

We are all different. Our bodies respond to different types of food and our personal likes and dislikes are highly varied. Some people can lose weight with higher fat, some people can’t. Some people have no problem eating lots of salt, others like me, have to be cautious. Some people need fewer, larger meals to feel sated, others need to graze through the day. Understanding who you are as an eater becomes paramount in defining a diet that will bring weight loss and then let you adjust it for life-time maintenance.

Dieting is exactly what has made us all afraid of eating, yet to lose weight and keep it off for life, learning to eat is imperative. That’s no brainer you are thinking, yet in my experience getting people to eat is more difficult than getting them to diet. When they do eat foods that they thought were only available during the overeating phase of their life they feel guilt and have a hard time enjoying it.

My new obese clients are always tentative eaters. They tend to eat foods from their dieting backgrounds and always in small amounts. When I ask them what appealed to them in these foods, they squirm and even try to convince me they actually like all that diet food. When I stand firm that diet food is not on our program they are lost to figure out what they should eat. Some even swear they cannot live without their liquid diet foods and insist on including them in their new programs. I just shake my head. Drinking calories and calling it nutrition was a bad idea, people need to eat, and they need to learn to eat healthy satisfying foods in quantities their body and psyche can handle.

Making that switch is not easy. It takes me a while to calm their nerves and get them to trust the process. Once they do, they are surprised by the types of foods they can have in their lives and that yes, even with 1800 calories a day they can maintain their weight while feeling satisfied and full. But still that nagging thought that they are cheating, that they are breaking the dieting rules persist. Even when they are experiencing fast weight loss.

Making the decision to not let food, or the fear of it control you is freeing. No longer will you give in to cravings because you believe the food is stronger than you. Food will become what it is meant to be: nutrition and fuel. It is when that happens that the obese can step away from their fat suit for life.

The latest diet to hit the health world is the pH Miracle Diet. Different diets appear to come and go as noted by health experts. The low-fat diets were all the rage in the 90s. When someone fails to lose weight after trying one diet, they will move on to the next diet. That next new diet is the pH Miracle Diet.

The pH Miracle Diet offers relief from the low-carbohydrate, high-protein diets of the past few years. The diet approaches nutrition from a new way and was created by Robert Young. The diet is also known as the Young Diet or the Alkaline Diet. The new approach is looking at what the human body needs and balancing those needs. Nutritionists and Holisitic doctors agree with this approach.

A slight alkaline quality exhibits in the human body’s pH. Since our body functions this pH level, in theory, the foods we eat should also be alkaline. The foods we currently eat, such as sugar, animal protein, caffience and processed foods, are all acidic foods. These acidic foods unbalance the pH in our bodies and contribute to other health problems. Supporters of the pH Miracle diet will tell you that how our body deals with alkaline minerals is affected by the acidic foods we eat. These minerals are sodium, potasssium, magnesium and calcium to name a few, and can all play a role in chronic diseases.

The pH Miracle Diet revolves around this concept. Nutritionist and health nuts agree that anything a person puts into their body contributes to how a person feels and their overall health. Mainstream doctors will certainly advocate a well balanced diet that includes fruit, vegetables, proteins and dairy products; but the pH Miracle diet goes beyond this. The diet stresses how ingesting acidic foods will eliminate essential minerals from your body. By adhering to the pH Miracle diet, a person is not eating dangerous foods that can wreak havoc on their bodies.

A lot of common foods are not allowed on the pH Miracle diet. Wheat and wheat products are a banned food prouct on the diet. You are probably wondering why as many, including the FDA, consider whole wheat products to be healthy. The pH Miracle Diet shows that grains such as wheat, oats, rice and millet are actually acidic and are harmful to our bodies. Only alkaline grains such as buckwheat, quinoa and spelt are encouraged.

All meats and diary products are also probitied on the pH Miracle Diet. Goat milk, however, is ok as it is slightly alkaline. Other protein sources can be found in beans, tofu, nuts and seeds. Most vegetables, except mushrooms, are also encouraged because they are alkaline. Fruits that are acceptable are coconut, grapefruit, lemon and lime.

According to people who have tried the pH Miracle diet, you will feel beneficial effects on your health within the first two to three weeks of starting the diet. Regardless of if you follow this specific diet, eating less processed foods and more vegetable is good for your health. This has actually been a criticism of the pH Miracle Diet. Those against this diet claim that for those who already eat healthy and drink a lot of water, no future gains can be had from the diet. They are not taking into account the balance of acid and alkaline in the body.

It is true that as of yet, there are no scientific findings to back up the theories of the pH Miracle Diet. Many traditional doctors will not support the diet either. The diet’s principles are founded on Chinese and holistic medicine dating back centuries. These principles are being studied now at Johns Hopkins University and by Dr. Neil Solomon with the United Nations. When the findings are released, critics of the pH Miracle Diet may have to assess their position on the diet and it’s scientific theory.
