Dr. Robert Coleman Atkins (17.10.1930-17.04.2003) was an American physician and cardiologist. Controversial dieting plan he has produced has made him immensely popular. The dieting plan enables individuals to consume unlimited amounts of fats and proteins. This however is made possible only by limiting the intake of carbohydrates. another dietary technique called the Atkins grapefruit diet was introduced after many controversial opinions.

The Atkins grapefruit diet is said to be a combination between the Atkins Nutritional Approach and the Hollywood or Mayo Diet. This diet consists of the addition of a serving of grapefruit juice, grapefruit or grapefruit pills before every meal that is eaten. The guidelines for the meal go along the lines of the Atkins Diet. Everyone knows that six-pack abs are potentially the most sought after body feature. I am not sure anyone who doesn’t want to shrink their gut, lose body fat, curb lower back discomfort and develop rock-hard six-pack abs.

There are basically four major methods of measuring body fat. They include the Navy Method, Home Body Fat Scales, Skinfold Calipers and Hydrostatic Weighing. In this article we will look at the three that are most commonly used.

Home Body Fat Scales – This device measures body fat using the Bio metrical Impedance method. A very small electrical current is passed through your body and the resistance is measured. When this result is compared to the weight, the percentage of body fat can then be determined.

This test is prone to error however; because the impedance in the body is altered by other body parts that also generate some current. One example is the electrical waves in the heart and the skeletal muscles. Other factors include water in your body, your skin temperature and physical activity. In order to get semi reliable results you should also fast for 3-4 hours before the test, and avoid any form of physical activity at least 12 hours before the test.

Probably the most popular method of body fat testing is the Skin Fold Caliper test. This test should be performed by someone trained in this method. You can do it yourself but it is not recommended. If you just have to do it without professional help, I recommend getting a set of Accumeasure calipers. These are quite accurate if you follow the provided directions closely. Your skin is pinched between the calipers and a measurement is taken. After taking measurements from different parts of the body; they are plugged into a formula and your body fat is determined.

Hydrostatic Weighing- Hydrostatic weighing; also known as under water weighing is the most accurate way to calculate body fat. That is if you can find a hydrostatic weighing tank. How is it used? First you need to understand the Archimedes Principle. If you took physics in school, you will understand this better. But if you did not, I will explain it now. You or the examiner calculates your body density by measuring the amount of water you displace when you immerse yourself in water. The Archimedes principle reasons that the amount of water displaced when an object is partially or totally immersed in water, is proportional to the weight of that object. In this case you are the object. Then a formula is used to calculate body fat based on your body density. The problem is finding a hydrostatic weighing tank! This is too sophisticated for most people; but it remains the most accurate.

Does it really matter if you keep track of your body fat? Most people would say its way too much trouble. With all the different exercise programs and diets out there; knowing what your body fat is can help determine what program you should choose. It should be a vital part of your weight loss plan. Fat loss is just as important as limiting calories and losing pounds. If you want to track your diet or exercise plan progress, then body fat measurement is the most objective way to do this. When trying to lose weight, always remember to set realistic goals and don’t give up!
