Having Regular Exercise In Life Matters
An article written in Times Magazine makes the case that regular exercise does not contribute to weight lose or weight gain. It continues to imply that the more one exercises the more weight would be gained. Exercise makes us hungry therefore we eat more. The more calories taken eat the fatter we become. Is this statement true? Doesn’t this go against what we have all heard how exercise keeps weight off not the other way around?
It’s important to understand food and calorie consumption. Other factors contribute to weight gain like genetics, lifestyle, and health issues. So why does fitness matter? Physical activity helps our bodies stay strong. Exercise plays a role in controlling obesity and diabetes. It helps curb depression, gives us stronger bones which is extremely important as we age.
As our nation sees the rise in childhood obesity the need for exercise is more apparent than ever. Since the days of Eisenhower, Americans health related problems have increased as well as health care costs that pay for poor lifestyle habits like smoking and drinking. More and more Americans are prone to diabetes, heart disease and some cancers. The food industry doesn’t help the matter by providing our grocery shelves with products that are high in sugar and fat.
Americas food supply is changing. The average American no longer grows what he eats. We rely on large food conglomerates to conveniently stock our grocery shelves with in most cases are over processed, laden with fat or excess sugar filled food. We as a nation have done little getting Americans to exercise on a regular basis. Statistically this has been true since President Eisenhower was in office.
Health care costs continue to rise. Most of these costs go into lifestyle related problems. Americans as a nation are getting fatter. More live a sedentary lifestyle that fosters obesity, heart disease and diabetes. Gone are the days of working the fields to produce our night’s dinner. Now we have frozen dinners to zap, fast food chains on every corner, and junk food machines accessible to our young children thanks to school boards who look to profits over health.
There is no argument that exercise helps keep us fit. Schools are starting to implement more programs of physical activity and lunch programs are being upgraded with healthier choices. Schools are beginning to realize the importance exercise and diet to young children. Children benefit from exercise with improved concentration and have better test scores.
European societies have understood the value of fitness. Many of them allow exercise to be part of the working day. These countries find it important to accommodate pedestrian walkways and bicycles lanes. They encourage mass transit and their people embrace it. Less congestion on the roads, less pollution to breathe in.
So how important is fitness? A little bit of exercise goes a long way in the development of good lifestyle habits. Put some effort into physical activity, watch what you eat and how much you eat, and you’ll see how much better you’ll feel each and everyday of your life. It’s never too late to start.
